NMMA Mourns Loss of Industry Leader, Founder of EdgeWater Boats, Bob Dougherty

NMMA is sad to share the news that Founder of Edgewater Boats, Bob Dougherty, has passed away.

Bob Dougherty was an innovative boat designer who was known for refining the technique of building “unsinkable boats.” After retiring from Boston Whaler in 1990, Dougherty went on to launch two other boat manufacturing companies in Florida, EdgeWater and Everglades. Through his leadership, he is credited with creating 1,000 jobs in Southeast Volusia, Florida. A statement from VMA manufacturing alliance in an article from Daytona Beach News-Journal describes Dougherty ‘as a man who made a tremendous impact on the boating industry in our area.’ In 2004, the VMA named Dougherty to the Volusia-Flagler area manufacturing hall of fame.

Services will be held 4-7 p.m. Friday, April 1 at Baldwin Brothers Funeral Home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., with a funeral mass to follow at 10 a.m. April 2 at Our Lady Start of the Sea Catholic Church, also in New Smyrna.
